It’s Not Networking—It’s Relationship Building

We’ve all heard that cliché: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. But it’s only a cliché because it’s true. When people genuinely like, trust, and connect with you, they’re more willing to collaborate, troubleshoot, innovate, and help you succeed. “Networking” might sound like a forced cocktail-hour ritual, but real relationship building is about: Genuine Empathy Put yourself in someone else’s shoes (or hiking boots). Really try to get where they’re coming from—what challenges they face, what lights them up, what makes them anxious. When you focus on truly understanding people, you naturally develop a bond that shallow small talk can’t replicate. Kindness & Compassion Listen attentively and respond with warmth. If a colleague asks a “silly” question, answer it in a way that doesn’t make them feel silly. Meet everyone with the assumption that they’re trying their best—because more often than not, they are. Being Present Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, actually listen. A dash of mindfulness goes a long way in conversations: tune in to their words, their tone, and what’s not being said. You’ll be amazed how much more meaningful (and productive) your interactions become. Long-Term Mindset Friendships, partnerships, collaborations—these are investments. Think beyond the immediate win (or the immediate sale, contract, or project). Even if someone can’t help you today, who knows how your paths might cross tomorrow?
